Migrants: the explosive anger of the Greek islands

After two days of violent clashes between the police and the inhabitants of the islands of Lesvos, Chios and Samos, the vast majority of the riot police were forced to leave the islands on Thursday 27 February. The Greek press strongly criticises the migration policy of the government and of the EU.

On the second day of the general strike on the islands of Lesvos, Chios and Samos, near the Turkish coast, the anger of the islanders is on everyone's lips. No one can digest the scenes of unprecedented violence on these islands, caused by the presence of hundreds of riot police (MAT). "The police did not hesitate to bomb the demonstrators with tear gas. Today there are dozens of wounded and a climate of diffidence towards their connationals".

For several months the situation has been critical on these Aegean islands. Neighbouring Turkey has reopened the doors of immigration to Europe to renegotiate the agreement concluded with the European Union in 2016. 6 billion in exchange for Turkey's cooperation. "Today this agreement seems to be outdated, and it is the islands that are at the frontline and, as a result, suffering," explains the In.gr
